Shocking. That’s how I would describe the film.
The film seemed more as a documentary than as a normal movie made in Hollywood, or just a home made recording, so instead of calling it ‘movie’ I’d rather call it ‘documentary’. If I didn’t know that the people in the documentary didn’t know they were recorded I would never believe it. In some scenes it was obvious that they didn’t know but in some other, such as the naked scene in a very luxury hotel, it was just incredible the risk that the main actors had taken. What was disgusting was actually what they were presenting. I don’t know the culture of Kazakhstan but if it is the real culture then it is completely different from the ‘western world’. The amazing fact that this film had was the reaction of all the people involved. It showed the real hypocrisy of the society, the real way the people think and as you watch it you say “It’s impossible that they don’t actually know that they’re being recorded”. There are various scenes where people react as they would normally react. The scene of the high society dinner is still impressed very well in my mind. First the woman was calm and trying to comprehend Borat, because he is from a different region, society and most important CULTURE. But this thought was not enough. He passed the limit even though he was not realizing it. The documentary was very instructive and even though the end was close to an American movie, ending with a marriage and happy ending, it gave us a real view of the society.
